====== Windows 98/XP Dual Boot ====== This will set up 98/XP dualboot with one partition for each OS. I recommend using NTFS in XP which does mean you can't access the XP data from inside 98, but I found myself doing the opposite more often (access the 98 data from inside XP). XP is also more useful on a network and vaguely more secure. Fun facts: Windows 10/Server 2016 can access 98 file shares without a problem! I don't think the reverse works in 98, although it does on XP. You can plug your old 98 machine into a modern laptop, which is on your real network via wireless, and just browse to the UNC (\\98pcname) and start transferring files. No need to bridge the connections - it even works with APIPA addresses. Of course this is generally a pretty bad idea for security but on a home network I don't think most people should worry too much. It Will Probably Be Okay™ - Burn and boot to a Windows 98 install CD - At the CD startup menu: Boot from CD-ROM - At the 98 startup menu: Start computer with CD-ROM support - At the A prompt: **fdisk** - **Y** to enable large disk support - **Y** if it asks you any questions about NTFS partitions. You'll only get this if partitions already exist. - Go into option 3 and delete all partitions - At the main fdisk menu, choose option 4 and ensure no partitions are listed. - Back to the main fdisk menu again: Option 1 - Create partition - Option 1 - Create Primary DOS Partition - ...verifying drive integrity... (may take a few minutes on larger disks) - Do you wish to use the maximum size . . . **N** - ...verifying drive integrity... - Enter the size you want the 98 partition to be. Type the number in MB, rather than using percentages. If you follow this guide, the XP partition will fill whatever is left of the disk. - 98 partition is created - [esc] to get back to main fdisk menu - Option 2 - Set active partition - Enter partition number **1** - [esc] to get back to main fdisk menu - [esc] to exit fdisk - may need to press it twice to get past another message - Reboot the machine and boot into the 98 installer. - Install 98 as normal. It will ask you to format the drive - accept. If your drive is large, formatting will take a very long time. - im going to bed finishing this tomorrow
